Værøy, a smelly fishing island

Through this narrow passage we found our way into the huge fishing port.

Evening walk around the harbor basin.

Oystercatcher, now that they are breeding, they defend the nest for hundreds of meters.

One of many fishing vessels - if you look closer, you can already guess where the great taste, which lies above the village comes from...

Almost every place is taken by the fishing vessels.

And here we go - to get a better impression of the island.

The source of the great smell is quickly found...

...thousands of stockfish have been hanging out to dry for months. After drying, the fish has lost up to 80 percent of its liquid and exudes an intense fishy smell. However, its nutrients have been preserved in a highly concentrated form.

There is a nice steep trail on every hill (maximum height 450m).

It's still very quiet and we meet only...

...a handfull of other hikers.

With almost 20°C it's quiet warm, but the wind cools down nicely.

...where old fishing huts still defy the weather.

From the next peak we have a view to the old airport. It was operatet for only four years - after a fatal accident in 1990, the airport was shut down.

The weather changes all the time.

On the trail we can find fendering of black grouse, geese and even eagles.

There are hundreds of geese and their young on the island. Since they eat a lot (1kg of grass each day), they leave quite a mess everywhere (especially on the streets).

On the second visit to this viewpoint (at four in the morning) the light was finally good for taking photos.

After all these hikes, we deserved a visit to the very well-known restaurant (for the first time in a month). They served delicious monk fish, halibut and lamb :-)

The fishing boats go out day and night and bring back fresh fish.

Quiet hour at midnight.

The sun will now not cross the horizon for almost two months :-)
